Women's Wellness Initiative

The Women’s Wellness Initiative (WWI) is a collaborative effort that empowers chapters to address health issues impacting women, particularly women of color. This initiative emerged after the Sorority's participation in the United Nations/March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness panel in New York. Educational and programmatic efforts under this initiative encompass topics like Breast Cancer Awareness, Intimate and Domestic Violence, Heart Health, Diabetes Health, Mental Health, and other women-specific concerns. WWI programs can be conducted at any time during the sorority year.

Nu Lambda Sigma (NLS) is doing its part to encourage women to maintain a healthy lifestyle and minimize health risks. We aim to empower women to make informed decisions about their physical, mental, and emotional health and ensure there is a representative number of African women in clinical health studies in Africa.

Our goals are to:

  • Encourage women to maintain a healthy lifestyle and minimize health risks.

  • Empower women to make informed decisions about their physical, mental, and emotional health.

  • Ensure there is a representative number of African American women in health studies.

There are five health/wellness activities that our chapter implements throughout the year.

Breast Cancer Awareness/Education (October): NLS continues to promote Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated's Women’s Wellness Initiative across Africa, with a particular focus on breast cancer awareness, screening, and treatment in Liberia. We develop programs that raise local awareness and contribute to a comprehensive system that guides patients on their journey from awareness to necessary treatment. This journey is made possible through collaborative efforts with women from historically Black sororities of the Divine 9, clinical health partners, and charitable foundations. This year, we have successfully launched the second phase of our collaboration with partners and sponsors, and we have provided Survivor Baskets to women currently in treatment. These baskets contain essential items such as socks, blankets, scarves, ginger mints, tea, books, and magazines to support clinic patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Heart Health/Heart Disease Prevention (February): NLS is looking for partners to implement blood pressure (Hypertension) and stroke education and awareness clinics. NLS hosts CPR workshops to teach Bystander CPR to all members and affiliates.

Sisters Network Inc (SNI) Stop the Silence Walk (April): Nu Lambda Sigma is actively contributing to raising local awareness about the devastating impact of breast cancer in African communities. Through our partnerships with organizations like the D4 Collective in Liberia and other health partners such as Hope for Women, we aim to enhance awareness of breast cancer, raise funds for research, and support causes related to its prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. The D4 Collectives in Liberia are local chapters of historically African American sororities, collectively striving to improve the overall well-being of the community. Our commitment is rooted in upholding the values of education, integrity, public service, and activism, fostering social capital, and maintaining a lifetime dedication to building a legacy of hope. Our mission is to provide assistance and inspire hope in individuals affected by breast cancer through early detection, educational initiatives, and support services. In addition to these efforts, we provide survivor baskets to women currently undergoing treatment. These baskets include essential items like socks, blankets, scarves, ginger mints, tea, books, magazines, and more, to offer comfort and support to those in need.

Mental Health Awareness (May): The chapter is actively engaged in hosting a variety of virtual and in-person events throughout the year, providing platforms for meaningful discussions on mental health awareness and well-being for women of all ages. We understand that mental health is a crucial aspect of every individual's life, impacting their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences our thought processes, emotional responses, and behaviors, as well as our ability to manage stress, maintain relationships, and make decisions effectively. Recognizing the significance of mental health at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood, we facilitate conversations through these events to enhance awareness and understanding. These events revolve around four major dimensions, which collectively support a life in recovery; health (fostering informed choices that promote both physical and emotional well-being), home (recognizing the importance of a stable and safe living environment), purpose (encouraging meaningful daily activities, such as employment, education, volunteer work, caregiving, or creative pursuits, and advocating for independence, income, and resources that enable participation in society), and community (building relationships and social networks that offer valuable support in the journey towards better mental health). By addressing these dimensions, we aim to provide a comprehensive approach to mental health support and create a strong foundation for positive well-being.

GirlTrek Walking Initiative (Anytime): A health revolution for Black women - walking toward healing and liberation. We walk to heal our bodies, inspire our daughters, and reclaim the streets of our neighborhoods. A global movement of Black women leveraging the historic legacy of walking and the power of self-care as a pathway to heal and transform our lives. Walking 30 minutes a day is a radical act of self-love and the roots of a cultural revolution.
