Menstrual Health and Hygiene Initiative

Every month, 162 million women and girls across West and Central Africa face a shared but deeply personal challenge - menstruation. Yet, for too many, this natural process becomes a daily struggle, overshadowed by challenging environments and stigmatization. In the shadows of unsupportive social norms and limitations on their daily lives, these brave individuals often find their confidence and self-esteem eroded. They deserve better.

Progress has been made in empowering girls and women with menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) knowledge and skills, enhancing the policy environment, and adapting WASH facilities for menstruators. To drive sustainable, large-scale MHH action, we need a strong foundation - supportive policies, coordinated institutions, financing, and capacity development.

On May 28, 2023, we initiated pilot programs in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Nigeria. Each country hosted a Menstrual Health Day/Youth Symposium, serving approximately 1000 students. Our day of service included mentoring, educational sessions on MHH and personal hygiene, STEAM Educations programs, and an open dialogue with subject matter experts.

The Nu Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, is dedicated to combating period poverty in Africa. Our 'It's Normal Period' initiative ensures girls and women have the essentials they deserve. We advocate for their rights, resources, and education, reshaping the conversation around menstruation.

Partners

We collaborate with our private and public sector networks and donor platforms to promote 'It's Normal Period' in discussions on adolescent health, gender equality, women's empowerment, WASH facilities, and quality education.

Our program is sponsored by the Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation, dedicated to advancing marginalized communities. Through advocacy, we support the MHH product and service market, ensuring access to affordable, quality materials. Our mission involves community services, public education, advocacy, and research to empower girls and women in West Africa.

On behalf of the Undergraduate Chapters, we are now working with our International 2nd Grand Basileus, Samiria Robinson, to distribute Menstrual Health and personal hygiene goods to female students at the University of Cape Coast as part of the Birthright Journey community activation projects.
