EmpowerHer: Menstrual Health and Hygiene Education Initiative

Every month, 162 million women and girls across West and Central Africa face a shared but deeply personal challenge - menstruation. Yet, for too many, this natural process becomes a daily struggle, overshadowed by challenging environments and stigmatization. In the shadows of unsupportive social norms and limitations on their daily lives, these brave individuals often find their confidence and self-esteem eroded. They deserve better.

Progress has been made in empowering girls and women with menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) knowledge and skills, enhancing the policy environment, adapting WASH facilities for menstruators, and providing access to clean and safe drinking water. To drive sustainable, large-scale MHH action, we need a strong foundation - supportive policies, coordinated institutions, financing, and capacity development.

EmpowerHer International Foundation raises awareness and educates girls and women about combating period poverty through dignity and education. Our mission involves community services, public education, advocacy, and empowering girls and women in West Africa to improve school attendance, and academic performance, eliminate toxic sanitary products, and support environmentally safe menstrual products.

The EmpowerHer International Foundation focuses on four pillars: (1) Menstrual Health and Hygiene Education, (2) 1-year supply of Eco-friendly Reusable Pads, (3) a Borehole Initiative for access to clean and safe drinking water, and (4) a Lavatory (WASH) Initiative for safe access to toilet facilities. Since May 28, 2023, our chapter has led programs in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Nigeria. Each country hosts a Menstrual Health Day/Youth Symposium, serving over 2200 students. Our day of service includes mentoring, educational sessions on MHH and personal hygiene, STEAM education programs, and an open dialogue with subject matter experts.

The Nu Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, is dedicated to combating period poverty in Africa. Our EmpowerHer International Foundation ensures girls and women have the essentials they need during their menstrual cycles. We advocate for their rights, resources, and education, reshaping the conversation around menstruation.

Partners

We collaborate with the private and public sectors, networks, and donors to promote our initiatives. We welcome all interested partners inspired by our programs to donate and support our projects across Africa. The chapter was extremely grateful for previous sponsorship by the Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation, dedicated to advancing marginalized communities. We have strategically partnered with local manufacturers of eco-friendly, biodegradable, and free from synthetic gels and chemicals reusable period pads while creating a sustainable social enterprise network, generating employment, and supporting families.
